Augusto Baratta y su legado
Augusto César Baratta del Vecchio nació el 8 de agosto de 1887 en la Ciudad de Carrara, Italia, lugar muy famoso por su producción de mármol. Sus padres fueron Ferdinando Baratta y doña Elisa del Vecchio de Baratta. El primero era contador y trabajaba como administrador general en las canteras de una Condesa Florentina, esto permitió que don Augusto estuviera en contacto con el diseño de este preciado material. La educación de Baratta estuvo a cargo de doña Elisa debido a la muerte de don Ferdinando. Sus estudios siempre fueron encaminados al arte.
Después de cursar la primaria y secundaria, entró como alumno de Bellas Artes en Carrara, donde recibió tres años de dibujo ornamental y cuatro de arquitectura. Para esa época, Carrara era muy visitada por mercaderes en la búsqueda de mármol, fue cuando le salió una oferta de trabajo como dibujante en México después de coronar su carrera. Para entonces, el país azteca enfrentaba una situación difícil que coincidía con la revolución, por lo que muchos emigraban a otras tierras. A pesar de todas las inseguridades que enfrentó, Augusto César realizó algunos monumentos funerarios, pero se vio obligado a huir del país al estallar por completo la revolución. Así llegó a Guatemala, donde permaneció por varios meses.
Durante su estadía en el vecino país, fue contratado por el presidente de El Salvador, Manuel Enrique Araujo. Al llegar, se hospedó en la casa de la familia Mendoza, donde conoce a María Mendoza, con quien se casa en 1916 y procrean tres hijos: Ana María, Mario y Augusto. Durante la administración del presidente Quiñónez Meléndez, este le encargó una serie de proyectos residenciales y escolares en todo el interior del país.
Otras obras
El arquitecto e ingeniero Augusto Baratta es reconocido por el diseño y construcción de El Calvario, entre 1925 y 1950; sin embargo, existen otros inmuebles que contaron con su talento, entre estos la Basílica de Guadalupe, la Iglesia de San Juan Nonualco, la de Juayúa, la Catedral de Zacatecoluca, la Iglesia de Fátima y la Parroquia de San Antonio de Padua.
El Calvario
El templo El Calvario es una de las más antiguas del país. La estructura resguarda una diversidad de elementos estructurales y decorativos, como representaciones en mármol y sus tallados vitrales.
